Article | Dave Crisp: Frome Hoard find ‘the pinnacle’ of metal detecting career

Published by This is Somerset, Monday 19th November, 2012

In the sometimes solitary and occasionally mocked world of metal detecting, he is the David Beckham, the Prince William, the Barack Obama.

For when Dave Crisp unearthed one of the most important hoards of Roman coins ever found in Britain, he instantly became a hero to the thousands.

And now, with growing interest in the hobby – thanks, in part to Mr Crisp’s jackpot discovery – newcomers to the pastime need a detailed guide about how to be a great metal detector. And who better to write it than the finder of the Frome Hoard?

The book, Metal Detecting – all you need to know to get started, took 18 months to write, while Mr Crisp worked 60-hour weeks in his job, dealt with the aftermath of his discovery and continued to indulge in his beloved hobby.

Now retired, he is as busy as ever, and hopes his book will help those people who’ve been inspired by his discovery.

Article | Treasure Hunters want to work with city on ordinance to regulate metal detecting in parks

Published by Laconia Daily Sun, written by Michael Kitch

LACONIA — Three representatives of the Granite State Treasure Hunters appeared before the Parks and Recreation Commission last night after Kevin Dunleavy, director of Parks and Recreation, asked the commissioners to consider regulating the use of metal detectors and golf clubs in city parks.
Doug Sargent of Franklin, president of organization, which is approaching its 40th year and counts 70 members, told the commission “we are very supportive of rules and regulations, but would not like to see a prohibition. We’re not out there to destroy property,” he said. He explained that the organization worked with the city of Nashua, which developed a permitting process, and suggested the commission review its ordinance.
“Playing fields,” Sargent said, “should be off-limits.”
Sargent emphasized that his members “police their own hobby” as well as collect, bag and dispose of any trash they find. Apart from antiquities, he said those with metal detectors also find lost items. “We are ethically bound to try to find the owners,” he remarked, noting that he recently returned a class ring that went missing six years ago.
Jeff Pattison, chairman of the commission thanked Sargent for providing it with information, which he said would be considered in the course of drafting regulations.

Article | Metal detector pair find Saxon artefact

Published by The Express & Star, Thursday 15th November, 2012

Treasure dating back to the seventh century has been discovered by two metal detecting enthusiasts.

West Bromwich father-of-two Patrick Etheridge and his friend Danny O’Beirnes, from Birmingham, came across the gold pendant while searching private farmland in Meriden.

About the size of a 10 pence piece, the Anglo Saxon pendant features designs and patterns consistent with items from the famous Staffordshire Hoard that was uncovered in 2009. It is now being kept in the British Museum in London where it is being analysed. The pair said they were “over the moon” at the find.

Published  by This is The West Country, Sunday 11th November 2012

A POST medieval silver cufflink celebrating the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza was officially declared treasure at an inquest in Taunton.

The 13.6mm-wide accessory – engraved with two love hearts below a crown – was unearthed by metal detector enthusiast Doug Turner in Sherford, Taunton, on August 24.

Similar motifs were commonly found on cufflinks and buttons around the 17th Century as a popular symbol for marriage following the English monarch’s wedding in 1662.

A campaign to raise the cash, started earlier this year, has so far raised just a quarter of its target.

The aim is for it to become part of Worcestershire county museum collection where it can be conserved and then exhibited at venues across the county.

Article | Roman find in Kelty!

Published by Dunfermline Press, Saturday 3rd November, 2012

A ROSYTH man uncovered a 1500-year-old Roman brooch while out with his metal detector in Kelty.

Delighted John Wilson (47), Daniel Place, found the Dark Ages piece at a permission site at the north side of the village last month.

He said, “I had already found coins at the site dating from the 1700s to the 1950s, as well as a couple of Victorian-era brooches.

“I found this brooch at one of the few places on the site which was untouched. Whoever dropped the brooch had been sitting up on a rocky outcrop.”
