Article | Norwalk man is still …Lord of the rings

Posted by The Hour, written by Leslie Lake, Saturday October 27, 2012

NORWALK — Dan Godleski and his metal detector come to the rescue yet again for a Norwalk family. In a span of 10 minutes, Godleski did what the Kodonas family had been attempting to do for four years.

On a fall Saturday morning four years ago, John Kodonas was mowing his lawn at his West Rocks Road home; his 3-year-old son Konstantinos playing in the yard.

“I put my ring down so it wouldn’t get dirty, mowed the lawn, came inside to get cleaned up, and realized my wedding ring was gone,” John said. “I looked everywhere for it and then finally I asked my son if he had seen my ring. He said, ‘yes, I threw it.’ I asked him why he did that and he said, ‘I don’t know.’ “

Kodonas, his wife Stacey, and his parents spent hours searching the half-acre property for the 18 karat gold and platinum wedding band, but came up empty.

Article | Erotic art dating back to Roman times is discovered by amateur treasure hunters armed with metal detectors

Published by The Daily Mail Online, written by KERRY MCDERMOTT, Sunday 28th October 2012

A copper knife handle depicting a couple having sex and an animal bone carved into the shape of a penis with wings are among thousands of artefacts unearthed across Britain by amateur treasure hunters.

The erotic art is part of a huge haul of almost 25,000 Roman artefacts – mainly coins – discovered in England and Wales and documented as part of the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

The finds, reported in 2011 and dating back between 1,600 and 2,000 years, also include a copper bust of a bare-chested man – thought to be Antinous, the male lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian – and an unusual silver and gold brooch in the shape of a leaping dolphin.

Article | Time Team’s final dig: Archaeology series starring Tony Robinson is buried by Channel 4 after 20 years

Published by The Mail Online, written by LIZ THOMAS Tuesday 23rd October 2012

Tony Robinson’s archaeology series Time Team is being axed by Channel 4 after almost 20 years on screen.

Ratings have slumped in recent years and an attempt to revamp the show led to accusations from its own team of ‘dumbing down’.

Since it began in 1994 it has uncovered some remarkable historical finds – including skeletons of monks beneath Westminster Abbey and gold jewellery from Anglo-Saxon times.

Article | Prospectors rush for gold rights

Published by SMH.com October 12, 2012

Prospectors will be able to pan for gold, or use metal detectors to hunt for nuggets, in more Queensland state forests within months.

The Newman government is likely to open the door wider for “recreational prospectors” to look for gold and gemstones.

A spokeswoman for National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said no firm decision had yet been made, but the idea was being actively investigated.

“As part of our commitment to opening up the state’s National Parks estate land, which had been systematically locked up by the former Labor government, we are also considering proposals to allow recreational fossickers greater access,” she said.

Viking-Age Coin-Hoard

Publication | New Light on the 1843 Viking-Age Coin-Hoard From Deryykeighan Near Dervock in CO. Antrium

IN the 1959 volume of this Journal
1
, Mr. W. A. Seaby has published an account of the 1843
Viking-age coin-hoard from Derrykeighan near Dervock in the north of Co. Antrim, and this
account may be thought effectively to supersede Mr. J. D. A. Thompson’s Inventory listing
of three years earlier
2
. In the course of his paper Mr. Seaby suggested that the find may have
included a York penny of Eric Bloodaxe (948, 952-954), not improbably a sadty chipped
two-line (948?) penny of the moneyer Ingelgar which is in the Ulster Museum (ex Belfast
Natural History and Philosophical Society). New evidence more than bears out the validity
of what could be in 1959 little more than an inspired guess.
