Carthage plans for National Metal Detecting Day

Every once in a while, long buried pieces of Carthage’s history quite literally come to the surface.

On May 19, a Carthage City Council member is sponsoring a day that could bring even more of Carthage’s history to light.

Council Member Ed Hardesty, owner of Hardesty Enterprises, is planning a metal detector’s day in Carthage’s parks, in conjunction with National Metal Detector’s Day, an industry sponsored day for metal detector hobbyists.” – Taken from Article

Lager can ring pull is Roman treasure

“METAL detector enthusiast Terry Vickers’ first big find has turned out to be a gold Roman ring.

The 52-year-old retired engineer, from Chilton, near Ferryhill, County Durham, found the object while surveying fields near Wheatley Hill.

Mr Vickers, who has been pursuing his hobby for 37 years, was in court today to hear Durham Coroner Andrew Tweddle declare that his November 2010 find is treasure.” – Taken from Article

Metal detector turns up bit of World War II history

“Before the start of the monthly meeting of the Marine Corp League held at the Navy Club of Sangamon Ship #32 on Thursday evening, April 5, 2012, a unique dogtag handover ceremony took place. Marine Corp member Graham McCoy of Chatham, a metal detecting enthusiast, found a dogtag buried west of the current Southwind Park in Springfield. The dogtag belonged to Walter Alvin Krell, a World War II veteran and member of the U.S. Coast Guard who died in 1998. Here, Tim Krell of Springfield, his son, show off the recovered dogtag along with an early service photograph of his father taken around 1943.” – Taken from Article
