Article | Hunting for relics: Vincennes man uses metal detectors to unearth treasures from Ind. history

Published by Green field Reporter, Jenny Peter,  Vincennes Sun-Commercial, Friday 10th August.

VINCENNES, Ind. — To the untrained — or maybe unwilling — eye, Nobert Brown’s extensive collection of glass bottles, coins and beat-up looking toys and jewelry might look like, well, like a pile of junk.

But not to him.

“It’s the thrill of the hunt for me,” Brown said, gazing out over a table filled with his prized stuff. “And half the fun is in identifying what I find.”

Article | Reigate metal detector helps barman find lost family heirloom

Published by Surrey Mirror, Thursday 2nd August, 2012

A BARMAN and gardener at a Reigate pub was devastated after he lost a family heirloom while trimming hedges.

Will Gandey, 20, was clearing weeds and cutting back shrubs at the Skimmington Castle in Bonny’s Road, Reigate Heath, when he realised the gold ring he was wearing had fallen off his finger in the grounds of the pub.

Mr Gandey was particularly distressed because the ring was a family heirloom and had been handed down from his great-grandfather.

Afternoon customers joined the search for the ring in the flower beds, and some even got down on their knees.

One patron involved in the hunt then told Mr Gandey he knew a member of the Reigate-based Weald and Downland Metal Detecting Club.

Article | Scouts and students unearth Kingston’s past in archaeological dig

Published by Your Local Guardian, written by Clare Buchanan, Wednesday 2nd May 2012

Scouts and students discovered a musket ball, a wedding ring, and two military pendants when they took part in an archaeological dig to investigate the borough’s past.

The youngsters helped the Kingston upon Thames Archaeological Society after they won a £28,400 Heritage Lottery grant to investigate a site on the Hogsmill River in August last year.

The dig at the Southwood Scout Activity Centre in Tolworth focused on palaeoecology, which reconstructs the past environment through bore-holing and digging pits.

A lead token was also among the items found through the digging and metal detecting, which helped scouts achieve their heritage badge.
