Find of the Month: Rare Saxon Penny Discovered in Essex

We love seeing what our community uncovers, and this month’s standout find is a special one.

After receiving last month’s Regton newsletter, one of our customers, Andrew Pudney, shared a recent discovery: a Saxon penny found in Essex.

Using an XP Deus II, the signal immediately stood out:

“Nice high signal…as I don’t use numbers, I prefer to listen.”

At first, the significance of the find wasn’t clear. But as fellow detectorists began asking who had found the Saxon penny, the excitement quickly grew.

The coin was later verified by Alan at Essex Coins, who confirmed it could be a very rare piece.

The coin is believed to be associated with Cynethryth, the wife of King Offa, one of the most powerful rulers of Anglo-Saxon England. Coins bearing her name are exceptionally significant, as Cynethryth is the only Anglo-Saxon queen known to have issued coinage in her own right.

It’s a brilliant example of trusting your ears, digging those strong signals, and the rewards that can come from getting out there.

A huge congratulations to Andrew. An amazing discovery and a very worthy Find of the Month.
