13th-Century Gold Annular Brooch | Unearthing History with Garrett Pro-Pointer

Metal detecting often begins with curiosity; but for Terence, it started with something even simpler: keeping his wife company.

“About three years ago, I found myself stepping into the world of metal detecting. Although not in the way most people might expect. At first, I only tagged along with my wife, mainly to dig the holes for her signals. Little did I know, what began as a bit of company for her would grow into a hobby that not only fuels my passion for history but has also had a deeply positive effect on my mental health.”

Since then, Terence has become a keen detectorist. He now uses the XP Deus II with his preferred program, Deep HC, and has built up his detecting kit with equipment from Regton. His most recent addition, the Garrett Pro-Pointer, has quickly become a trusted tool. “Its range and build quality make locating finds far easier, and now I honestly wouldn’t detect without it.”

The Day Everything Changed

One ordinary day on a Lincolnshire club dig turned into an unforgettable milestone in Terence’s detecting journey.

“I was working a wide stubble field and, as usual, had a pouch filling with bits of lead, musket balls, and the odd modern coin. Just before lunchtime, I started heading back to the car when I got a signal of 61 on Deep HC. I dug down about seven inches, switched on my new pin pointer, and it started screaming. I’ll admit, I was convinced it would be yet another lump of lead. But when the soil crumbled away, I saw it; a gold annular brooch glinting back at me.”

Later research revealed the brooch once held five gemstones in its mounts, each surrounded by tiny pellet decorations that resemble little acorns. Even the pin carries delicate detailing. The Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) confirmed it likely dates back to the 13th century. It has been officially declared treasure and is now progressing through the coroner’s process for valuation.

Holding that piece of medieval craftsmanship, untouched for over 700 years, was in Terence’s words, “an indescribable feeling that deepened my love of both the hobby and history itself.”

Reflections and Advice

Although the 13th-century gold brooch is a highlight, Terence is quick to point out that detecting is about more than rare finds.

“For me the hobby is about the peace of the countryside, the anticipation of each signal, and the sense of community among detectorists.”

For newcomers to the hobby, Terence offers some straightforward advice:

  • Join a reputable club — you’ll learn more from experienced members than any manual could teach you.
  • Invest in good kit from trusted suppliers like Regton — they give honest advice, and their delivery is second to none.
  • Learn your machine — swing slow, keep your coil low, and dig everything until you understand your detector’s tones and numbers.

And if you’re looking for an essential accessory? “If this pin-pointer can’t find it, then it isn’t there.”

More Than Treasure

Finding that 13th-century gold annular brooch will always stand out as Terence’s most significant discovery so far. But even without it, he says the hobby has given him so much; history at his fingertips, peace of mind, and friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

And at Regton, we’re proud to be part of that journey.

  1. Well done Terence, a find of a life time. I also purchased the Deus2 from Regtons too. I went to their shop in Birmingham for advice on which machine to buy. They gave me good honest sound advice and tips.I must have been about Two hours there and walked away with Deus which is a fantastic machine and am really happy with it.
