In the early 1990s, the Ingram family—Derek Ingram and his sons Nigel and Marcus—were a familiar sight at metal detecting exhibitions and rallies across the UK. This photograph, taken at the Bridlington Exhibition, captures a moment in their journey as pioneers in the metal detecting industry.

A Family’s Passion for Metal Detecting

Derek Ingram, the founder of Treasure Hunting Specialists, was not just a businessman but also a passionate advocate for metal detecting and innovation. He was the designer and patent holder of the ‘S’-shaped metal detecting stem, which remains widely used around the world today. Recognising the potential of the hobby, his sons, Nigel and Marcus, went on to establish Regton in Birmingham, aiming to provide quality metal detectors and accessories to enthusiasts across the UK.

Together, the Ingrams traveled to various exhibitions, setting up displays to showcase the latest in metal detecting technology. These events were more than just sales opportunities; they were gatherings of a community united by a shared interest in uncovering history. Something to this day has continued with Seb Ingram, Marcus’ Son, the third generation of detecting enthusiasts.

At these exhibitions, Regton proudly displayed metal detectors from leading brands, including Garrett, Whites Tesoro, Fisher,Their commitment to offering top-quality products helped establish Regton as a trusted name in the industry. Visitors to their stands could expect hands-on demonstrations, expert advice, and a chance to connect with fellow enthusiasts.

Legacy and Continued Commitment

Today, Regton Ltd. continues to serve the metal detecting community from its base in Birmingham. Nigel remains involved in the company, but Marcus Ingram is now the company Director upholding the values instilled by his father. Regton’s ongoing support for events and forums, reflects its enduring commitment to the hobby and its enthusiasts.

Seb Ingram has joined making the third generation of the Ingram family in the business and can be found visiting many detecting events throughout the year enjoying this wonderful hobby that all started with our father and grandfather back in 1968.
