Report | British Museum restores helmet found with metal detector

Published by BBC News, Reported by Rebecca Jones, Tuesday 10th January 2012

When it was first dug up from a field in Leicestershire, it was thought to be a rusty bucket.

Further examination revealed it to be something far more significant – a decorated cavalry helmet which has shed new light on the Roman conquest ofBritain.

Now, following a nine-year restoration project, the so-called Hallaton helmet is to go on display.

Rebecca Jones reports.
